Assemblée is a group put together by Luc Ex.
It was his dream to create a 'jazz quartet', though by no means a traditional one. This quartet would clearly bear his own signature .
The quartet uses such classic ‘jazz-style’ elements as specific melodic lines and syncopated rhythms and where free or soloist roles are welcomed. But it’s also mixed with his own background, introducing a variety of different pop- and noise arrangements, passionate and energetic rhythms and including soundscapes and elements of musique concrète.
Luc Ex wrote a dozen new compositions for Assemblée.
It was a joy to see the finesse and maturity of Luc Ex's Assemblée, which brought together reeds master Ab Baars, and the unfailingly impressive saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock with Hamid Drake's finely honed percussion and Luc Ex's own disarmingly muted excursions on electro-acoustic bass. They carved out space with an innate sense of musical vision, created witty and starting dialogues around Luc's demanding compositional frameworks and bounced melodic aggregations against an irrepressible subversive intent.
